Meet Camera USA 2018 judge Mark Sloan
Camera USA 2018 opened June 1 at the Naples Art Association. This year, 218 photographers from around the country submitted images for inclusion in the show. From these, jurors Christopher Jones, Mark Sloan and Paul Tognarelli selected 75 photographs, with work coming from California (7), Colorado (1), Florida (21),Georgia (2), Illinois (2), Maryland (2), Massachusetts (3), Michigan
(3), Minnesota (1), Mississippi (2), New York (8), North Carolina (2), Ohio (2), Oregon (1), Pennsylvania (1), Rhode Island (1), South Carolina (1), Tennessee (2), Texas (4), Virginia (2), Washington (4), Wisconsin (2) and Wyoming (1).
Mark Sloan has served since 1994 as Director and Chief
Curator of the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art at the College of Charleston, South Carolina. Over the course of his 34-year career, he has maintained a consistent engagement with photography. He curated No Man’s Land: Contemporary Photographers and Fragile Ecologies featuring Edward Burtynsky, David Maisel and Emmet Gowin and is co-curator for Southbound:
Photographs of and about the New South, which debuted in Charleston this year and will tour nationally. Several of his other shows have traveled to institutions such as the High Museum in Atlanta, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, the New Orleans Museum of Art and Presentation House in Vancouver. He has authored or co-authored 16 books on subjects ranging from Russian conceptual art to photographs
of early 20th century circus life. In the 1980s he was Executive Director of The Light Factory in Charlotte, North Carolina and Associate Director of San Francisco Camerawork.

Tom Hall is both an amateur artist and aspiring novelist who writes art quest thrillers. He is in the final stages of completing his debut novel titled "Art Detective," a story that fictionalizes the discovery of the fabled billion-dollar Impressionist collection of Parisian art dealer Josse Bernheim-Jeune, thought by many to have perished during World War II when the collection's hiding place, Castle de Rastignac in southern France, was destroyed by the Wehrmacht in reprisal for attacks made by members of the Resistance operating in the area. A former tax attorney, Tom holds a bachelor's degree as well as both a juris doctorate and masters of laws in taxation from the University of Florida. Tom lives in Estero, Florida with his fiancee, Connie, and their four cats.
