Meet ‘Outside Mullingar’ actor Martin LaPlatney
Playing September 22 through October 22 (with four preview performances) in the ArtStage Studio Theatre at Florida Rep is John Patrick Shanley’s Outside Mullingar. Directed by Chris Clavelli, Outside Mullingar features Florida Rep ensemble members Rachel Burttram, Brendan Powers and Viki Boyle, who are joined by Martin LaPlatney.
Martin LaPlatney is very happy to be returning to Florida Rep having done One Slight Hitch here with Chris directing (sixth photo, below).
“I first began to work as an actor in Seattle in the early 70’s and soon ended up as a founding member of the Empty Space Company where I did some 23 plays in four years, often performing in three different shows a day,” states Martin. “This led to working at other theatres in Seattle including ACT and Intiman Theater.”
He moved to New York in 1976 and landed roles in several Broadway plays. Among LaPlatney’s Broadway credits are Amadeus, The Crucifer of Blood, Hedda Gabbler, Major Barbara, and The Road To Mecca.
Martin appeared Off-Broadway in Tartuffe, The Passion of Dracula, The Waverly Gallery, Give Me Your Answer Do (Roundabout Theater), The Paris Letter, and Pretty Hunger (The Public Theater).
Regionally, LaPlatney has enjoyed leading roles ranging from Jack Tanner in Man and Superman to Macbeth at The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis. Martin has worked with the Hartford Stage Company, Indiana Repertory Theater, The Ahmanson Theatre, Olney Theater Center, GeVa Theater, Delaware Theatre Company, Baltimore Center Stage, The Empty Space, ACT, (Seattle), Pennsylvania Center Stage, Florida Studio Theater, and many others.
“In the years since I first began I have appeared in over 100 plays (yikes!),” Martin chuckles.
On TV, you may have seen Martin in episodes of Law and Order, Cosby Mysteries, Alien Nation, Royal Pains, The Good Wife, Boardwalk Empire and Elementary. He has also appeared in a bunch of commercials (“thank God for those”).
With the encouragement of the late Paul Giovanni (Tony nominated director and author of The Crucifer of Blood) Martin began to direct in the late ‘80s, first as Paul’s assistant director and then at different theaters around the country. For a long time, he also had the pleasure of teaching acting with his wife and partner, Susan Greenhill, first for Manhattan Class Company and then in their own studio. Presently, instead of teaching an ongoing class, Martin prefers to coach actors for auditions.
Martin is also accomplished in several martial art disciplines.
