‘Bad Jews’ Synopsis, Play Dates and Ticket Info
Lab Theater’s March 2016 production is Bad Jews by Joshua Harmon. The action in this zesty comedy starts the day after their grandfather’s funeral, when three cousins in their 20s argue about family, legacy, and what it is to be a “good Jew.” In one corner is Daphna Feygenbam, a “Real Jew” who is volatile, self-assured and unbending. In the other is her equally stubborn cousin Liam, a secular and entitled young man who has his shiska girlfriend, Melody, in tow. Stuck in the middle is Liam’s brother, Jonah, who tries to stay out of the fray. When Liam stakes claim to their grandfather’s Chai necklace, a vicious and hilarious brawl over family, faith and legacy ensues. The argument is hilarious with a serious undertone about the place of faith in the lives of all young people today. Thought-provoking and vividly funny, Bad Jews was a New York Times Critic’s Pick. “There’s nothing like a death in the family to bring out the worst in people,” writes The Times. “This unhappy truth is displayed with delectably savage humor in ‘Bad Jews,’ a zesty play by Joshua Harmon…[that is] THE BEST COMEDY OF THE SEASON.”
The production will be performed at 8 p.m. on March 11, 12, 17, 18, 19, 24, 25 and 26, with a 2 p.m. matinee on March 20.
