‘Rent’ comes to The Belle Theatre August 2-11, 2024
Rent is coming to The Belle Theatre August 2-11, 2024.
Based loosely on Puccini’s La Boheme, Jonathan Larson’s Rent follows a year in the life of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York’s Lower East Side under the shadow of HIV/AIDS.
Among the group are:
- Mark Cohen, a nerdy love-struck filmmaker;
- Maureen Johnson, Mark’s former girlfriend and still the object of his affection;
- Joanne Jefferson, Maureen’s Harvard-educated public interest lawyer love interest;
- Roger Davis, Mark’s HIV-positive roommate, musician and former junkie;
- Mimi Marquez, Roger’s new girlfriend, the HIV-positive drug addicted S&M dancer;
- Tom Collins, Mark and Roger’s HIV-positive computer genius former roommate;
- Angel, Collins’ HIV-positive drag queen street musician/lover; and
- Benjamin Coffin III, a former member of the group who married for money and has since become their landlord and the opposite of everything they stand for.
How these young creatives negotiate their dreams, loves and conflicts in the 525,600 minutes that make up a year provides the narrative thread to this groundbreaking musical. Set in the East Village of New York City, Rent is about falling in love, finding your voice and living for today.
