Play:  tick, tick … Boom!

Book: Jonathan Larson & David Auburn

Music & Lyrics:  Jonathan Larson

Genre:  Musical

Synopsis:  tick, tick… Boom! is an intimate, autobiographical pop/rock musical from the creator of Rent. It tells the story of Jon, a struggling composer whose life seems to be going nowhere. About to turn 30 and still waiting tables for a living, Jon is desperately scared that he may never “make it” on Broadway. The pressure to break out or give up only grows as Jon’s girlfriend, Susan, announces that she wants to get married and move out of the city, and his best friend, Michael, quits acting and finds huge financial success as a Madison Avenue corporate executive. Jon’s new futuristic dystopian musical SUPERBIA has a great workshop but no prospects, and as time ticks by Jon wonders if maybe his friends are right, and it’s time to throw in the towel. Created by Jonathan Larson as a deeply personal peek into the life of an artist, tick, tick… Boom! follows one man’s journey to define success on his own terms.

What the Critics Said: tick, tick … Boom! [is] a love letter to Broadway musicals and the artists who create them … a musical about making a musical based on an autobiographical one-man show by Jonathan Larson, the astonishingly talented writer/composer of “Rent,” who died just before that show’s opening night.” Nell Minow, RogerEbert.com.

Historical Note: Lin-Manuel Miranda directed the 2021 film adaptation of “Tick” for Netflix, and the Kennedy Center has commissioned Neil Patrick Harris, the sitcom star turned Tony Award-winning song-and-dance man, to direct an upscaled reimagining of the three-hander version of “Tick” that ran off-Broadway in 2001. (Harris himself played the Larson stand-in, Jon, in a 2005 London production.)

Notable Songs:

  • “Sugar,” an ode to Hostess Twinkies
  • “Sunday,” a pastiche to Stephen Sondheim
  • “Come to Your Senses”
  • “Why,” wherein Jon learns to accept that his work must be its own reward
  • “Johnny Can’t Decide”
  • “No More”
